Selecting the right wax is an important first step in making candles that burn well, smell great, and match the style of candle you want to create. Different waxes are designed for different uses, so choosing the correct one will make your candle-making journey much easier.
Note: When making wax melts, a pillar wax should be used.
Wax for Container Candles
If you’re making candles in jars, tins, or other containers, you’ll need a container candle wax. These waxes are designed to grip the sides of the container and burn evenly without shrinking away.
Recommended Paraffin Container Wax
- Chandler Grey PRO Container Wax – A smooth, one-pour paraffin wax with excellent burn quality and strong scent throw.
Recommended Natural Container Waxes
- Chandler Grey R4 – A rapeseed wax designed for container candles.
- Kerasoy 4130 – A popular soy container wax that’s beginner-friendly and easy to work with.
Wax for Pillar Candles
When making pillar candles using moulds, you need a wax that will naturally shrink as it cools. This shrinkage helps the candle release cleanly from the mould.
Recommended Paraffin Pillar Wax
- Chandler Grey Blended Wax – Formulated to contract as it sets, making it ideal for all types of pillar moulds.
Recommended Natural Pillar Wax
- Chandler Grey Melt Wax
Container wax and pillar wax are not interchangeable. Container wax is made to adhere to surfaces, while pillar wax is designed to pull away for easy unmoulding.
Do You Need Wax Additives?
For standard container or pillar candles, the waxes listed above work well without any additives. Additives are optional and are usually used only for specialised finishes or more advanced techniques.
